ROOTS x PLAT INSTITUTE

Roots is a gastronomic object inspired by the invisible structures that sustain identity: roots, memory, landscape, and time.

Developed as a conceptual tableware piece inspired by the philosophy of El Celler de Can Roca, the project consists of three branch-like serving elements, each representing one of the three Roca brothers and their individual yet interconnected creative universes.

The forms are inspired by the movement of trees shaped by the Tramuntana wind, translating the landscape of the territory into organic sculptural gestures. Each branch was 3D printed using a different biofilament — cork, olive, and almond — materials deeply connected to Mediterranean culture and agricultural heritage.

At the end of every branch, a spoon-like form emerges to hold food, transforming the act of eating into a symbolic gesture of gathering from the land itself. More than tableware, Roots becomes a narrative object where nature, gastronomy, and memory converge.

The project explores how materials, form, and ritual can communicate emotional and cultural values, creating a dialogue between food and territory through design.

OBJECTIVE

Creation of a conceptual gastronomic object inspired by roots, landscape, and memory, using bio-based materials and digital fabrication to translate cultural and environmental narratives into an interactive dining experience.
RESULTS

Development of a series of 3D-printed serving pieces made from cork, olive, and almond biofilaments, inspired by the forms of wind-shaped trees and designed as symbolic representations of the three Roca brothers, merging gastronomy, storytelling, and material innovation.
